Public Hearing Tonight for West Monroe Police Re-Accreditation

The West Monroe Police Department is up for re-accreditation.
West Monroe -- Chief Jeff Terrell announced that a team of assessors for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will arrive on November 17, 2013 to examine all aspects of the West Monroe Police Department’s Policy and Procedures, Management, Operations, and Support Services.

Verification by the assessment team that the West Monroe Police Department meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain re-accreditation – a significant recognition of law enforcement professional excellence. The West Monroe Police Department received initial accreditation through CALEA on November 20, 1993, and is the first Law Enforcement Accredited Agency in the State of Louisiana.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. The session will be conducted in the West Monroe City Council Chambers in City Hall at 2305 North 7th Street, West Monroe, Louisiana.

If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do so by telephone. The public may call 318-397-6548 on Monday, November 18, 2013 between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Telephone comments, as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA standards. A copy of the standards is available at the West Monroe Police Department. Local contact is Officer Amber White (318) 396-2660 ext. #1748, or awhite@westmonroe.com.

Persons wishing to offer written comments about the West Monroe Police Department’s ability to meet standards for accreditation are requested to write: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Blvd., Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia, 20155, Attention: Steve Mitchell.

The West Monroe Police Department has to comply with 188 standards in order to gain re-accredited status. It is important to our agency to maintain the highest level of excellence in public service.

The Accreditation Manager for the West Monroe Police Department is Officer Amber White. She advised the assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similarly composed agencies, but from out of state. The assessors review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and off site locations where compliance can be verified. The assessors are: Major Billy Lane, Hattiesburg, MS Police Department (Team Leader); and Ms. Marion Heintz, Downers Grove, IL Police Department. Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accredited status.

Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which they were originally accredited.
