UPDATE 9:00 p.m. -- Flowers on the sheriff's office doors and his name in the Farmerville headlines remain tragic reminders of long-time Union Parish Sheriff Bob Buckley's death.
A special memorial benefit is trying to ensure his legacy lives on.
"We feel like this is the way to honor him for all that he's done for this parish over the last 23 years," Union Parish Sheriff, Dusty Gates, said.
The Bob Buckley Memorial Benefit, which will be at the Willie Davis Recreation Center in Farmerville on Saturday, September 28th, was originally supposed to help pay for the sheriff's medical expenses in his battle with cancer.
The sheriff lost that battle last Tuesday and now the benefit will focus on helping his family.
"What we have left over after the medical, we are going to set up in a scholarship, a Bob Buckley scholarship, that we will put specific guidelines on, that they go into law enforcement," Benefit Co-Organizer, Lynn Ramsey, said.
The benefit also hosts an auction with items like LSU and New Orleans Saints football tickets, items organizers said have been flying in from across the ArkLaMiss.
"Their first question was 'We love Bob. What can we do?'" Ramsey said.
"He is well-known throughout the state and throughout this whole nation," said Gates. "He is talked about everywhere."
Folks in Farmerville hope the impact Buckley made on others will keep his memory going for years to come.
"I just hope that people will always remember him," Gates said. "Although he may be gone, he will always be the sheriff of Union Parish."
