Southern University on Statewide Tour

SU officials are touring the state promoting a new university image.
MONROE -- Officials from Southern University made a stop in Monroe Saturday as part of their statewide series of town hall meetings.

The group arrived in Monroe in their Bayou Classic Road Show RV at noon at the Clarion Inn and Suites, spreading their new message about SU.

The university's president, Dr. Ronald Mason, called it "Transforming the Southern System: From Good to Great."

In this time where SU is facing millions of dollars in budget cuts, Mason said they're trying to build a more modern image for the school.

"We're building a new Southern on the traditions of the past," Mason said. "There's a new reality in higher education now, after all these budget cuts and less state appropriations, so we've been spending the last two or three years, really, re-designing Southern as a modern, 21st century institution of higher learning."

From Monroe, the SU convoy will depart for Shreveport and eventually travel all around the state, including New Orleans, showing off the new SU image.
