Severe Storm Damage in Monroe

Extensive damage along Lamy Lane from the powerful winds Saturday afternoon. Books-A-Million, Kilpatrick Funeral Home, and Strauss Theatres all damaged.
NOTE: Walmart in Monroe was closed Saturday night due to a power outage there. The security officer at the store said crews have been working on a downed power line behind the store.

The board president for Strauss Theater Main Stage said the roof has blown off part of their building. Because of this, the production of "A Tuna Christmas" is canceled on Sunday.

The Strauss Youth Academy, a separate building nearby, was not damaged. Officials say the will still have their "Christmas on Broadway" production on Sunday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.


MONROE -- Books-A-Million in Monroe, and many other areas took a hit when the storm struck Saturday afternoon.

David Hanks and Kierstin Curtis were inside Books-A-Million when the powerful winds hit.

Hanks said, "We heard something falling, and then we saw the letters falling. Then we saw the sides of the wall falling, and I saw the transformer over there blew up and flashed everywhere. Glass started shattering."

Curtis said she and some friends were sitting near the front of Books-A-Million having coffee when the power went out. "It got really loud really quickly and we ran towards the back of the store. And we heard an explosion and glass breaking, then it all stopped."

Monroe Police Sergeant Mark Johnson says no injuries have been reported, and as of now, there is only property damage.

Sergeant Johnson says, "At this point, Monroe Police Department has activated its emergency response, special response team, executive staff, and other special operation members."

Police will also be on the look out tonight for damage or accidents.

After the storm hit Books-a-Million, it traveled east and damaged other places along Lamy Lane.

There was damage at Kilpatrick Funeral Home. The Kilpatrick and Lamy sign flew near the doors.

There was also internal and external damage at Strauss Theatre. Part of the roof was torn off. Members of Strauss were inside trying to salvage irreplaceable items in the dark. Strauss Theatre told us that their production of "A Tuna Christmas" will be canceled Sunday.

Monroe Police are urging people to stay indoor Saturday at all costs. If you do have to go out, do not stop to look at damage our of curiosity, as it could disrupt officials who are working on scene.

Also, police say to be careful of slippery roads and possible down trees and power lines.
