New Research: Obesity May Be Linked to Hearing Loss

The adverse health effects of obesity are well known.
NBC NEWS -- The adverse health effects of obesity are well known.

And now a new study suggests carrying too much weight is linked to hearing loss.

Researchers followed over 68,000 women over a ten year period and found those with a higher body mass index had an increased risk of hearing problems.

In fact, "extremely obese" women had the most hearing loss -- about 25-percent more than normal-weight women.

Those who carried the most belly fat also were more likely to be hearing impaired.

Experts aren't sure why the two conditions are related, but suggest obesity may narrow blood flow to the cochlea and restrict its function.
