UNION PARISH -- Three National Guardsmen have been arrested by Union Parish sheriff's deputies accused of stealing more than $13,000 worth of night vision goggles and scope systems for M-16 rifles.
Booked Saturday and Sunday into the parish's detention center on felony theft charges were 33-year-old Justin Michael Bounds of Farmerville, 22-year-old Kristopher Ryan Redding of Sterlington, and 26-year-old Austin Brett Hiser of Monroe. Bond on each was set at $5,000.
Sheriff Dusty Gates says deputies received a complaint Saturday from an officer at the National Guard Armory (Detachment 1 921st Engineer Co.) in Farmerville. The officer told deputies he believed he had a possible suspect in the thefts of three sets of night vision goggles and two scope systems known as ACOGs.
The suspect, Bounds, was brought to the sheriff's office along with a set of the NVGs that were missing. Gates says the investigating deputy read Bounds his rights and interrogated him.
Detectives say further investigation revealed the participation of Redding and Hiser. Each of the guardsmen had a pair of NVGs. Hiser and Redding were found to possess the ACOGs, according to the sheriff.
Bounds and Hiser were arrested Saturday and Redding was arrested Sunday.
