Minden Hosts 27Th Annual MLK Jr. Parade

The town of Minden celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday with their 27th annual parade.
MINDEN, La. (KTAL) -- The town of Minden celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday with their 27th annual parade.

Downtown Minden was full of excitement Monday.

"It was really fun," said 9-year-old Keegan Bryan. "I was getting candy."

Marching bands, dancers, vintage cars and more helped celebrate the annual MLK Jr. Parade.

"This year's theme is 'Dreams in Action Change the Future'," said Parade Chair Fayrine Kennon-Gilbert. "We're excited, the community coming together, black, white, young and old, that's what it's all about."

The parade is fun for any one of any age, but officials hope parade-goers understand and remember what it is they're celebrating.

"MLK was a man that fought for freedom and he was a man of peace," said resident Judy Hudson.

Between the candy catching and dancing, elders made sure their little ones knew what it was Dr. King did.

"It's important to me that my grandson know where he came from," said Hudson. "There were so many things we couldn't do and Dr. MLK made it possible today."

"Just remembering who the man was and what his legacy was and that it continues to carry on," said Shiela Bryan.

This year's parade was the best yet, with around 40 entries.

"Often times we talk about Dr. King's dream, but we need to do more than talk, we need to try and continue it," said the Parade Chair.

As the event grows, so does the hope of many that Dr. King's dream will live on for years to come.
