No woman should die giving life. But today alone, 800 women around the world will die from complications experienced during pregnancy and childbirth. Most of these deaths are preventable.

Here in the U.S., the rate of deaths from complications of pregnancy and childbirth has nearly doubled in the past 20 years. In addition, in the U.S more than 50,000 women a year, one every 10 minutes, nearly die from complications of pregnancy or childbirth.

Ensuring a healthy pregnancy and safe childbirth is important not only for the health and well-being of a woman but also for the prosperity of her family, community, and society. Dr. Priya Agrawal speaks about the issue and Merck for Mothers' U.S. partnerships and Alma Roberts shares her first-hand experience working with pregnant mothers in underserved communities.
