GSU's Librarian Emeritus Turns 100

A very special birth celebration was held for Grambling's very own centennial citizen on Sunday.

GRAMBLING -- A very special birth celebration was held for Grambling's very own centennial citizen on Sunday.

Hazel Johnson, born in 1913, celebrated her 100th birthday at New Rocky Valley Baptist Church in Grambling Sunday afternoon.

Johnson is Grambling State University's retired Librarian Emeritus.

She served as the university's Head Librarian from 1949 until 1974.

Family, friends and even city officials celebrated this milestone in Johnson's life Sunday.

"I would say that comes from the same thing I said: Love one another," said Hazel's sister, Evelyn Johnson. "Hazel has worked with these people. They love each other and they know each other, so it wasn't anything else for them to come out and say 'Happy Birthday!'"

Louisiana Senators Mary Landrieu and Rick Gallot and GSU President Frank Pogue sent letters congratulating Johnson on her birthday.

Grambling Mayor Edward Jones came in person to deliver a plaque to Johnson for her birthday.
