OUACHITA PARISH -- Whether the catch was big or small, kids showed up by the droves Saturday for the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office Annual D.A.R.E Youth Fishing Tournament.
The tournament spanned all Saturday morning.
The kids were allowed to fish in any waterway in Ouachita Parish and bring their catches to the Ouachita Parish Rifle Range just before noon.
There, the fish were weighed and prizes were given out to the best of each age range.
"We want to promote our D.A.R.E. program," Ouachita Parish Sheriff, Jay Russell, said. "We're wanting our kids to know that there's alternatives these days to drugs and to bullying and to gangs and things of this nature, so this is what we're trying to do along with having a good day of fishing."
The tournament also featured free food and plenty of youth acitivies as the sheriff's office tried to emphasize the fun of fishing as a good hobby for kids, hopefully one that will steer them away from the temptations of drugs.
