Winter Weather Cancellations Create Blood Shortages

Monroe -- Winter weather warnings have cancelled many of the scheduled blood drives LifeShare-Monroe was depending on to maintain the community’s blood supply.

The public’s help is needed to recoup the loss of 250 blood units due to blood drive cancellations.

Most of those cancellations are from business and school closures today and the anticipated closures on Wednesday due to icy conditions and power outages.

LifeShare’s facilities are open today and all eligible donors of all blood types are encouraged to make a donation ahead of the storm to ensure enough blood is available in the days to come. Severe weather has created blood shortages nationally complicating the availability of blood supplies from other regions. Patients are depending on local residents to respond to the appeal by giving blood at our regional facilities.

LifeShare is open at the following facilities:

Monroe – 2909 Kilpatrick Blvd. until 3:00pm today (weather permitting) call ahead 322-4445

Ruston – Graham Shopping Center until 4:00pm today (weather permitting) call ahead 254-1167

El Dorado, AR – 443 W. Oak St. until 4:00pm today (weather permitting) call ahead 862-2150

LifeShare is also conducting a public blood drive at Walmart in West Monroe from 11:00am until mid-afternoon, weather permitting.
