Web Extra: Cyber Detective Expects to Make More Arrests in 2014

Whether those who prey on children are using their smartphone, tablet or traditional desktop -- the Benton County Cyber Crimes Unit is monitoring their every move.
Benton County, AR -- (KNWA) Whether those who prey on children are using their smartphone, tablet or traditional desktop -- the Benton County Cyber Crimes Unit is monitoring their every move.

"This is the most disgusting job, honestly, I've ever worked," says Glenn Latham, a cyber crimes detective at the Benton County Sheriff's Office.

"And I worked meth labs for six years."

His fingers are the ones Benton county criminals think belong to a 15-year-old girl hitting "send" from her smartphone.

"We could do this day in and day out, and we would never have a shortage of people to talk to." Latham says.

Latham's 2013 case file includes.

George O'Dea, a former Springdale school bus driver accused of downloading child porn in February.

Barry Gebhart, a former Fayetteville High School athletic director accused of sexting a 14-year-old, which was actually Latham, in October.

And Travis Beard, a former Adair County jailer accused of sexting a fictional 15-year-old, which was also Latham, in December.

All three are facing charges.

"Kids nowadays have access to pretty much everything on the internet, "Latham says.

There's really no protection out there for them."

Formed in January, the Cyber Crimes Unit, in its debut year -- netted dozens of child porn arrests.

As well as two internet stalking of a child arrests, compared to none in 2012.

Many result from Latham going incognito on the internet.

"I've got further training to act the part of a younger female," Latham says.

"For those that are asking or saying whether it's entrapment or not...we're matching what they bring to us."

And that is what usually brings would-be predators to jail.

"This is honestly the most upsetting job, Latham says.

"But then again, when you think about who you are possibly saving, it's what made me go back the next week and the next week and the next week."
