UPDATE: Suspect Accused of Drunk Driving in West Monroe Crash

A man was arrested in the Monday night crash in the 3600 block of Cypress St. that injured a woman and four juveniles.
UPDATE Tuesday 10:40 p.m. -- West Monroe Police have released new details to KTVE/KARD on the identity of the intoxicated driver that injured a mother and four children in a car wreck on Cypress St. Monday night.

44-year-Old Ricky Lee O'Briant of Start was arrested in the Monday night crash in the 3600 block of Cypress St. He is accused by police of drunk driving.

"Once on scene, it was determined the driver of the at-fault vehicle was impaired," said West Monroe Police Cpl. Jade Gabb.

According to the arrest affidavit, O'Briant was driving westbound on Cypress when he crossed the center line and crashed into the victims' vehicle head-on.

The affidavit reads an open can of Bud Light was found by police between his feet and authorities found him at the scene being held in the driver's seat by witnesses.

The affidavit reads O'Briant admitted to drinking several beers while driving and taking Oxycodone.

"He was booked into West Monroe Correctional Center, where he was booked for DWI 4th, careless operation as well as cited for open container of an acoholic beverage inside his motor vehicle," Gabb said.

The affidavit reads this is O'Briant's fourth DWI charge after being arrested twice for DWI in Louisiana in 2004 and once in Texas in 2009.

"If the police arrest them and the facts are there, they're charged. Period. There is no diversion. They're probably one of the most dangerous invidividuals out there in our community," said Ouachita Parish Assistant District Attorney, Gary Aycock.

Aycock said a third DWI is a felony and a fourth is even worse.

"Fourth offense is not less than 10 years, no more than 30 years, $5,000 mandatory fine that he has to give," he said.

O'Briant is currently being held in the West Monroe Detention Center.

West Monroe Police confirmed all four of the children have been released from the hospital. The affidavit reads the mother received a neck injury and, according to police, she remained in the hospital at noon on Tuesday. Her condition is unknown at this time.
