MONROE -- Monroe police say William Oliphant is dead and his wife is seriously injured after a single vehicle crash on Louisville Avenue. It happened near 3rd Street just after 2 p.m. Thursday.

Police say an elderly couple was in the car. The man driving suddenly left the road way and hit a utility pole. The pole then fell on the 2006 Buick trapping the two people inside. Monroe police, fire fighters, AMR, and Monroe traffic engineers responded to the call. The Department of Transportation was also called in to assist in blocking off nearby roadways. Entergy workers also were on scene, because the electrical wires were still live on the pole that fell.

About an hour later the man and woman were removed from the car. Both were flown to a Shreveport hospital, where the driver was pronounced dead. Police say his wife has serious injuries from the impact.

Investigators say a possible medical condition may have suddenly made it difficult for the man to control the vehicle.

All roadways in the area are now open to traffic, with the exception of North 3rd Street. That road is still closed until the traffic light can be repaired. Police are asking drivers near that intersection to use caution.
