Senators voted 16-16 on House Bill 370. It needs 20 votes to pass. 

The bill would prohibit drivers from engaging in a call, writing or sending a text message or reading or posting messages on a social networking site.

The bill can be revisited before the session ends. 

Baton Rouge -- A bill that bans the use of cellphones in school zones will be debated in the full house.

House Bill 370 was approved in the House Transportation Committee.

The bill would prohibit drivers from engaging in a call, writing or sending a text message or reading or posting messages on a social networking site.

First-time violators would be subject to fines of up to $175, then up to $500 for subsequent offenses.
