SU Ranked Among Top 10 Producers Of Future Black PhD Grads

Southern University was recently reported to be among the top 10 producers of black undergraduates who go on to earn doctorate degrees in science and engineering.
BATON ROUGE (NBC33) - Southern University was recently reported to be among the top 10 producers of black undergraduates who go on to earn doctorate degrees in science and engineering.

The list, provided by the National Science Foundation after a decade of research, was published on the Huffington Post at the end of January 2014.

Southern is listed as number nine on the list of 25 schools.

Although the list includes HBCUs as well as predominantly white universities, all of the top 10 schools are historically black.

Howard University took the top spot. Other well-known universities on the list include Florida A&M, Tuskegee, Harvard, Yale, UC Berkeley, Brown, and Cornell.

In a statement provided by Southern, the university’s Chancellor, Dr. James L. Llorens, said: “This is great news but not surprising. This has long been the track of thousands of students who begin their educational careers at HBCUs. Many outstanding students at Southern and other HBCUs are driven to obtain terminal degrees. They are successful because of the concrete foundation and nurturing they get on the usually smaller, more family-oriented campus environments at HBCUs.”
