MONROE -- Monroe police were called to a large fight at Johnson Park Monday evening.

Officers say it started out around 6 p.m. as fight. About 200 juveniles gathered in the park.

Police say it quickly escalated and there were reports of several shots being fired. One juvenile boy was taken to the hospital with injuries, originally reported as a gunshot victim. Once police arrived to that scene, officials say a witness claiming to be the boy's aunt said he was not shot, but beat up. Police say the boy's mother took him to the hospital and supervisor's are checking on the extent of the injuries at this time.

During this time, police say they were trying to run the crowd off, but it moved a few blocks over to Jackson and Jack McEnery streets.

Shots firing continued and there was also an auto-pedestrian accident within the crowd. Police say the victim ran away before police could assist.

Police say the situation is now under control.

We have a crew on scene and will bring more details as we receive them.
