The Louisiana State Police has a history that dates back to 1922, when the Louisiana Highway Commission was formed in response to the arrival of the automobile. At the time, the Highway Commission patrolled
By 1928 the Highway Commission grew to over 70 uniformed officers and an additional branch of law enforcement, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, was established to deal with criminal activity not related to traffic laws. That was until July 28, 1936, when the two divisions of law enforcement were combined and the Louisiana Legislature passed a bill that created the Louisiana State Police.

The application process is simple. First, visit the Louisiana State Police Commission website at http://laspc.dps.louisiana.gov/ and download the Cadet Application.

Once an application is obtained, verify that you meet the minimum qualifications, which include:
1. Two (2) years of experience as a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified peace officer in a full-time position, whose job duties include armed duty with the power of arrest.
2. A minimum of sixty (60) semester hours from an accredited college or university, (must attach transcript or degree); or
3. Any two (2) year combination of Options 1 and 2 above, whereby thirty (30) semester hours will be equivalent to one (1) year of experience; or
4. Three (3) years of continuous active military duty in the United States Military (must attach a DD-214 or letter from current commanding officer verifying service).
