Home Health House Calls: Colonoscopy

In this edition of Home Health House calls we learn about Colonoscopy.
Welcome to Home Health House Calls.

A colonoscopy allows the physician to look inside the entire large intestine. This procedure is used to look for early signs of cancer. It is also used to diagnose unexplained changes in bowel habits. Colonoscopy allows the physician to identify inflamed tissue, ulcers, bleeding, and abnormal growths. The prodecure usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes. The pt is given a mild sedative or pain medication during the colonoscopy. A recovery period of an hour or two is common to allow the sedative to wear off. Everyone should be screened at 50 years of age. Some factors may require screening at an earlier age. Discuss what is best suited for you with your doctor.
