Grambling -- A college sorority help spearhead an event to help a fellow student that lost much of his belonging in an apartment fire earlier this month.

The Grambling State University Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority held an event this morning on campus to help Derrick Young.

Young was left without anything after a fire destroyed his and several other units at Drew Apartments in Ruston.

Young says he's thankful for the help from his Grambling family.

"Hope I can just start to rebuild. I lost everything from identification to furniture and school supplies. I'm just making everyday happen, I'm so grateful for their help in everything."

Last week the Louisiana State Fire Marshal ordered the Drew Apartments to shut down, forcing the remaining tenants living there to leave.

The fire marshal cited unsafe living conditions as the reason.

The January 9 fire that destroyed 8 units has been attributed to a faulty furnace.
