EL DORADO, AR. - An El Dorado woman is dead, and the suspect remains in critical condition after being shot by police, late Saturday night.

Police say they were called to the scene at 10:03 P.M.

"We received a call from a lady stating that she had dropped some kids off, at a residence at 706 Murphy," said Capt Kevin Holt.  "After the kids were dropped off, they went inside the house, and came out screaming that their mother had been injured."

Police say the children, did not witness the murder.

The victim, 28-year-old Lavecchia Alysia Dixon of El Dorado was rushed to the Medical Center of South Arkansas, and later airlifted to UAMS in Little Rock, where she was pronounced dead.  Holt says they cannot confirm whether or not she died from gunshots, but only that she was fatally injured.  He adds the cause of death will be available upon completion of an autopsy.

Holt says when police arrived on scene, they discovered the suspect 25-year-old Rashad Gonzales Morgan, of El Dorado, inside the house, with a small, silver handgun.  Police say Gonzales went out the back door as police were setting a perimeter around the home, when they engaged him.

"[Morgan] came out of the residence brandishing a weapon," said Holt. "[Morgan] repeatedly ignored verbal commands to drop the weapon."

That's when officers fired at Morgan.

"The suspect at this point, is in the hospital here in El Dorado, in critical condition," adds Holt.

Holt says the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, as is protocol until a review of the case is complete.

Morgan will be charged with one count of capital murder, four counts of aggravated assault, felon in possession of a fire.
