NEW ORLEANS (WDSU) -- Officials with Loyola University in New Orleans announced they've laid off 18 staff members and said 12 non-tenured faculty will not have their contracts renewed in April, according to WDSU 6 News.
The layoffs are coming as the university has been trying to trim its budget in light of a large drop in enrollment this year, the second year in a row Loyola has seen its enrollment numbers decline.
Officials recently announced 46 faculty and staff members had accepted an offer of early retirement from the university, cutting its deficit by about $2.4 million.
According to Loyola spokeswoman Meredith Hartley, these last layoffs should balance the university's budget.
