Bernice Man Arrested for Felony Battery

A Bernice man is being held on a $10,000 bond accused of knocking a victim unconscious and either kicking or trying to kick him in the head.
UNION PARISH -- A Bernice man is being held on a $10,000 bond accused of knocking a victim unconscious and either kicking or trying to kick him in the head.

Johnny L. Holmes Jr., 23, of Bernice Villa Apartments, was booked June 10 into the Union Parish Detention Center for second-degree battery, which is a felony.

Witnesses at the Willow Village Apartments called deputies and said that a man had been knocked unconscious and that they witnessed Holmes try to kick him in the head. Two witnesses said he kicked the victim while the third said it appeared he kicked the unconscious victim on the side of his head.

The victim, who deputies interviewed at Reeves Memorial Hospital in Bernice, said he didn’t remember anything except being knocked unconscious.

One of the witnesses told deputies that Holmes had been wanting to fight “ever since he got out of jail.”

Deputies found a large pool of blood at the scene of the fight and reported that the victim had numerous abrasions and severe swelling on the face.

In another June 10 arrest, deputies booked Joby Adam Dendy, 30, of 1233 Daniel Rd., Marion, into the parish detention center for simple burglary, second office driving while intoxicated and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $13,250.

Sheriff Dusty Gates said the deputies received a complaint from a resident on Pisgah Church Road that he, his daughter and another relative had seen a white male with blonde hair run from the complainant’s shop beside his house and get into a pickup truck that had been left on the road.

They told deputies they were sure it was Dendy because he recently had been taking items from family members to buy drugs.

The truck was spotted at the intersection of La. Hwys. 15 and 549 headed south. A deputy stopped the vehicle and K9 Jack alerted deputies of possible drugs. A marijuana grinder was found with residue and a glass pipe for smoking drugs.

Deputies said he smelled of an alcoholic beverage and was unsteady on his feet. Dendy refused all field sobriety and chemical tests.
