1 dead, 1 injured in standoff with New Orleans SWAT team at downtown hotel

The SWAT team was called to the Westin Hotel Canal Place on Iberville Street downtown about 6 a.m., police said.

NEW ORLEANS (WDSU) — One person was killed and another injured in a standoff early Sunday morning with a SWAT team, New Orleans police said.

The SWAT team was called to the Westin Hotel Canal Place on Iberville Street downtown about 6 a.m., police said.

Police said an armed man barricaded himself in a room on the 17th floor of the hotel.

"We went up with their security, made entry into the door, (and) when we got into the door made contact with an individual armed with a weapon, we secured out a position there," New Orleans Police Department Cmdr. Jeff Walls said.

Police said the gunman pointed his weapon at officers, and that's when the SWAT team was called.

Investigators said telephone negotiations lasted three hours, and more shots were fired during that time.

"There was another gunshot. We did make entry. At that point, we have two victims. One is deceased. One had two gunshot wounds," Wall said.

Paramedics rushed the victim, who suffered gunshot wounds to the chest, to a hospital.

During the incident, guests on the 17th floor were evacuated, and guests on other floors were told to stay in their rooms.

Clay Walker, who was visiting from Nashville, was walking to Café du Monde when he saw the police activity.
“It was just a little nerve-wracking when you walk by and see these guys with SWAT vests on, bullet proof vests and all you have is a flimsy backpack on," Walker said.

Police said two weapons were recovered inside the gunman's hotel room, and while it's still early in the investigation, officials said it appears the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigators said those involved were from out of town.
