Attorney for Monroe City Council Members Responds to Contempt of Court Motion

A lawyer representing Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo has filed a motion to hold four members of the Monroe City Council in contempt of court.
SATURDAY UPDATE -- The attorney for the four Monroe City Council members is speaking out after Mayor Jamie Mayo's attorney filed a motion for the officials to be held in contempt of court.

Attorney Paul Loy Hurd issued this statement to KTVE/KARD Saturday morning:

“I am disappointed that Mayor Mayo has initiated contempt proceedings through a political press release.  Nothing has been provided to me or the Council members concerning “contempt” charges.  Nothing has been provided to me or the Council members about a hearing date.  The Mayor apparently has chosen to disregard the standard scheduling rules of our local District Court.

“The Mayor insists on suing the Council instead of governing the City of Monroe with the Council as provided in the City Charter. The Council members have worked with the Mayor for the last 60 days to arrive at good appointments to the I-20 Board.  In response, the Mayor issues political attack press releases.  The Mayor’s legal attacks on the Council members only succeeds in increasing legal fees and reducing public trust in his administration.  The Council members are attempting to cooperate with the Mayor and move the City forward under the orderly rule of the Monroe City Charter.  Hopefully, the Mayor will choose cooperation over litigation.

“As for the Mayor’s legal allegations, once the Mayor follows the standard legal procedures for Court, by providing the Council members with his allegations, and once the Mayor follows the standard scheduling rules of the District Court, a hearing will be set and the Council members will respond to these personal attacks on the Council members.

“The citizens of the City can be assured that the Council has fully cooperated with the Court from the outset and will continue to do so.”

We'll continue to keep you updated on this story as it develops.
