EL PASO, TEXAS (KARK) -- An Arkansas couple celebrating their 12th wedding anniversary by camping in the Lone Star State are safe after getting stranded in the vast West Texas wilderness.

According to ArkansasOnline.com, Cathy Frye, a reporter at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and her husband, Rick McFarland, a photographer for the newspaper, were celebrating their 12th wedding anniversary as they had the previous 11, by returning to Big Bend National Park, where they first said "I do."

After learning that all the trails were closed in the national park due to the government shutdown, the couple decided to try some trails at Big Bend State Park, following a suggestion from the park ranger.

The two set up camp and made their way to a hiking trail that turned out to be more challenging than they expected, and decided to try to find an easier route back to their campsite, but were unsuccessful, according to the article.

Frye and McFarland spent the next three days trying to find help and survive, before the couple decided that he needed to go on without her.

McFarland was able to find his truck Friday night, then drove to the ranger station asking for help.

Searchers came to assist McFarland and the ranger, but still had not found Frye as of 2:30 a.m., so they decided to suspend the search until morning.

According to the article, about 40 people split into teams of four and began searching Saturday morning until sundown, to no avail.

When the search resumed Sunday morning, searchers shouting "Can you hear us Cathy?" finally heard a faint cry for help.

Volunteers located Frye, who was then taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated for severe dehydration.

The search was slightly hindered by the government shutdown, as some federal resources were not made available.
