ANGOLA -- An investigation is underway after prison guards in Angola, Louisiana open fire on a car with two children inside.
Investigators say the vehicle compromised security at the prison in Angola Sunday afternoon.
They say the driver swerved around the stop arm at the prison's entrance and drove onto the prison grounds.
At least two guards report opening fire as another investigator pursued the car in a separate vehicle.
The chase ended with a head on collision.
Guards say they were aware children were inside the car when they opened fire but were following protocol.
"So you don't know what's gonna happen if that car gets in here, or what's in that car, but you're gonna assume that's not going to be good, so you want to stop the car. You got to stop the car," said Burl Cain, Louisiana State Penitentiary warden.
Authorities have taken the driver into custody.
The local sheriff's office and Louisiana state Police are investigating.
