32nd Annual Louisiana Reading Association Conference

Friday the Louisiana Reading Association (LRA) kicked off their 2-day annual state conference at Clarion Inn and Suites in Monroe
Friday the Louisiana Reading Association (LRA) kicked off their 2-day annual state conference at Clarion Inn and Suites in Monroe.

The day started with "School Blitz" during this time, teachers visited 4 different schools in the area with exceptional literacy scores ; and 7 different schools with exemplary reading programs from across Louisiana got the opportunity to walk around the exhibit hall and book fair at the conference.

The conference is designed to help teachers and parents help their students and children improve their literary skills.

Aretha Eldridge-Williams Parents & Reading Chairperson of (LRA) says that sometimes parents want to help, they just don't know where to start, and that's where we come in. 

This morning Congressmen Vance Mcallister, representatives from the Lieutenant Governor's Office, and the International Reading Association were in attendance for the Striving Leader Comprehension Literacy (SRCL) Grant recipient's meeting.

The Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy (SRCL) grant is a federal grant aimed at improving the reading and writing skills of students.

Louisiana was 1 of the 6 states to receive the federal grant with 27 school districts being awarded with the funding for literacy projects.  

Jill Slack from the Louisiana Department of Education in Baton Rouge says "The sole purpose of this grant is to build teachers knowledge of literacy to help students."

The grant is for over $140 million for over a span of 5 years, 95% of the funds go to the school district while only 5% goes to the Board of Education.

Saturday (LRA) wants to invite the public to get involved.

With an onsite registration of $35, there will be a parental engagement session with Barbara Johnson and a chance to meet famous authors.

Registration will be from 7:30 a.m. 2:00 p.m.
