Washington Parish -- (WDSU) The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office says a 12-year-old girl tried to kill her 8-month-old niece.

The Sheriff’s Office says the 12-year-old girl was living in a home with her 16-year-old sister and the infant daughter of the 16-year-old, the Sheriff’s Office says.

According to testimony from the 12-year-old, she was jealous of the attention being given to the infant, so she decided to try to kill the infant by administrating liquid medication to the infant while the 16-year-old was bathing. Two different doses of the medication were given over a two-day period, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Adults in the home became distressed after noticing that the infant was sleeping for an extended period of time. The 12-year-old confessed to her actions to the adults upon being questioned as to why the baby might be in distress, the Sheriff’s Office says.

In infant was carried to Riverside Medical Center and has recovered from the effects of the medication, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The 12-year-old was arrested on an attempted first-degree murder charge.

The Sheriff’s Office has withheld names of the juveniles.
