Warhawks Throttle Trojans, Sweep Series
MONROE, La. -- ULM raced out to a 12-0 lead after three innings and the Warhawks claimed a 16-5 win as they earned a series sweep of UALR Sunday afternoon at Warhawk Field.
The Warhawks’ sweep of the Trojans marks the first series sweep for ULM (11-17, 4-5) since the squad took all three games from UL-Lafayette from May 17-19, 2012. Sunday’s shortened contest per the league’s run-rule on the final day of the series marked the first time ULM run-ruled an opponent since they defeated UL-L, 17-0, on May 19, 2012.
ULM got things going early with two runs in the first inning followed by a trio of runs in the second. Highlighted by Rasch’s two RBI, a total of four Warhawks tallied RBI in the first two frames.
The Warhawks blew the game open with a seven-spot in the home half of the third inning. Justin Stawychny and Dalton Herrington connected on back-to-back homers to push the ULM lead to 7-0. Stawychny and Herrington’s feat marked the first time since May 18, 2010 that the Warhawks hit back-to-back homers (Judd Edwards and Nick Wade, vs. Northwestern State). ULM added five more runs in the frame to extend the lead to double-digits.
After six scoreless frames, the Trojans (11-13, 4-5) ended the scoring drought with five runs in the seventh. Kilgore Gailmard highlighted the inning with a three-RBI double to the gap in right center.
The Warhawks responded in the bottom half of the inning to end Sunday’s affair. Ross Moore led off the inning with a solo blast to left field. With two outs in the inning and two runners on base, Stawychny unloaded on a 1-0 offering from Stephen Chandler and recorded three RBI on his homer down the left field line.
Alex Hermeling (1-3) earned his first win of the season as he tossed five shutout frames, allowing just one hit and three walks with a career-high eight strikeouts.
Stawychy led the Warhawks with three hits, five RBI and two runs, while Herrera, Rasch and Stockton all added multiple hits in the win.
Cameron Allen (2-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout in 1.2 innings of work. Gailmard led the Trojans with three RBI on his lone hit.
The Warhawks will return to action during the midweek with a pair of contests. ULM will open the midweek with a road tilt at Alabama on Tuesday (6 p.m.), before returning home to face Nicholls State on Wednesday (6 p.m.).
