ULM nabs USM's Mike Federico as new Head Baseball Coach

MONROE, La. - KTVE 10 Sports Director Gene Ponti has learned that University of Southern Mississippi pitching coach Mike Federico has accepted the Warhawks head baseball coaching position. An official press conference will be held next week.

During his eight seasons, Federico mentored nine, first-team All-Conference USA selections and had another five players earn second-team honors, including Taylor Braley who was taken in the sixth round of the MLB Draft by the Florida Marlins after posting a 7-2 record to go along with a 3.40 earned run average.

A native of Slidell, LA, and a three-year starter at USM (1995-1997) as a catcher, he was named Conference USA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2015 after the Golden Eagles posted a C-USA-low 3.14 ERA and setting a school record with 10 shutouts (second-most in C-USA history).

During his time with the Golden Eagles, Federico has assisted Chad Caillet in the program's recruiting efforts that snagged the No. 3 ranked class in 2012. In all, Southern Miss boasts 22 players drafted during his tenure, including 15 pitchers.

He’ll take over a program that was 12-43 in 2017, the fewest wins in 43 years at ULM. The record cost Bruce Peddie his job on May 20th.

Federico is married (Hannah) with two sons and a daughter. For more on ULM’s hire, watch KTVE NBC 10 Sports tonight at 6 & 10 or continue to follow the story on myarklamiss.com.
