Playing Through Pain: Warhawks Trying to Make it Work with 10 Players Out for the Season

ULM's defense was sliced and diced in potato country, right out of the gate.

In the first eight minutes of action, that unit surrendered three touchdowns.

Another hair pulling moment for Coach Matt Viator and his men, only scoring once in four trips to the red zone.

"...I didn't think we had great legs and that disappointed me a little bit, " says Viator. "I thought we were a step or two too slow. We're trying to get this program going. We're trying to teach, at least I am, as a staff, the way we want to practice being consistent. You know, we've been at it for 14 straight weeks."

Adding insult to injury, for the year, the inexperience on the field from both sides of the football due to the 15 players out, 10 of them for the season.

"We've got to do a better job in the future, or I do, of trying to figure that situation out, " Viator continues. "You know, if we can have more of our guys available. We have to look at it from a to z, and try to improve it. And, it starts with me."

If the Warhawks' matches with other Sun Belt foes indicate anything, expect another shootout when facing Appalachian State. It's a squad two spots behind the maroon and gold in the conference's offensive category.

"I think it all depends going into the game of what their idea is, and what they need to defend " Viator says. "I think that's what we're excited about, what our offensive coaches are excited about. I don't thinkk it matters to us. I think we can run it or throw it, so."
