Mule-ing Over the Success of the Southern Arkansas Softball Team

It's hard to find a school that's got a better win-loss percentage than some of the top-tier softball powers.

You'd go nuts trying to figure out the team that's appeared in the NCAA tournament in four of the last five seasons. But, they're in our back yard. And, in Magnolia!

"Well, you just get the right kids to buy into what we're teaching here, " says Lady Muleriders head coach Jason Anderson.  "And, our goal is going to compete for championships year in and year out. We're going to play at a high level and we're going to do things to help us compete at a high level. But, they're going to play for something with a town backing them and an administration backing them."

Southern Arkansas eclipsed 50 victories in two of the last three years. In 2018, they've strong-armed opponents with a 1.71 earned run average. Their ace, Victoria Taylor, is 28-0 in the circle.

"I just take it a game at a time, " said Taylor. "So, I don't really think about my numbers...I'm thinking of how I can get out of this inning. And, I can go back and let my hitters do what they do."

That's not everything. One of the ingredients to this team is hitting nearly tops in the Great American Conference. Including, second in the country in home runs.

Brooke Goad has homered 28 times this season. She holds the Division II record, with 86 total.

"If I happen to see one in the wheelhouse, and take advantage of it. And, capitalize on the mistakes the other teams make. As a team collectively, that's what a lot of us do. We hit the spots in which we need to hit. That's how we've executed other teams."
