Bulldogs Report: Learning How to Close

For the fifth time this season, the Bulldogs either lost or won a game decided by a touchdown or less.

It came down to a late score in the second to last drive for North Texas.

That further dug a hole for the program's chances for a fourth straight bowl game, and eliminating them from winning the Conference-USA West.

"I think guys try to do too much, " says Louisiana Tech Defensive Coordinator Blake Baker. "I think at the end of the day, if guys just trust each other and do their job, we can do really, really well for 95 percent of the game."

Despite the close defeats, no one donning a Louisiana Tech uniform is doing any finger pointing. But, they're working to make sure this won't happen in the three remaining contests.

"We've done competitive drills all camp, " says head coach Skip Holtz. "There's times the offense will be successful, there's times the defense will be successful. And, I think those are great teaching opportunities and mechanics to understand what the other side of the football is trying to do."

Somehow the defense needs to get buckled against a Florida Atlantic offense that's averaging 47 points during their five game winning streak. And, it's all thanks to a couple of running backs, who are getting at least 6.7 yards per carry.

"They really spread you thin, " says Holtz. "And, as they spread you thin horizontally, they do have speed. So, when they hit one of those seams, that's why they've had so many big plays."

Blake Baker's defense will face someone under center, similar to who the Dogs had a couple of years ago - Jason Driskel. Yes, he's the younger brother of former Tech quarterback Jeff.

"I would say, Jason, he's a little bit of a better ball carrier than Jeff, probably not as good of a pocket passer, " says Baker. "There's a lot of similarities. If you watch him, you could definitely mistaken the two for each other."

The Bulldogs host the Lane Kiffin coach Florida Atlantic Owls on Saturday at 2:30.
