Kirstin Alvanitakis, Communications Director with the Louisiana Democratic Party issued this statement.
"We are pleased that Mayor Mayo appears poised to make an announcement about his run. The 5th District is challenging terrain for a Democratic candidate, but we believe there is a clear path to victory given the chaos on the GOP side... if and only if the Party unites. While we can't 'clear the field' anymore than the Republicans can, the consensus among Party activists across the district is we have our best shot with a single, strong Democratic candidate."
So far no other Democrat has announced their intentions to run for Congress. Qualifying for the election takes place in August.
Monroe -- Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo tells KTVE/KARD that he will be a candidate in the 5th Congressional District race.
Mayor Mayo will make the announcement official on Wednesday. He's holding news conferences in Monroe and Alexandria to announce his candidacy.
Mayo ran during last year's special election to replace Rodney Alexander.
