Louisiana Senate Approves 'Independent Desgination' Bill

Baton Rouge -- The Louisiana Senate approved a bill that would allow candidates to run as 'independents' on state election ballots.

Currently, candidates who are not affiliated with any of the five recognized political parties – Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Green or Reform –are required to be listed on the ballot as “No Party.”

State Senator Rick Gallot is the author of Senate Bill 60.

If approved by the full legislature, SB 60, becomes effective January 1, 2015. The bill now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.

Sen. Gallot said that the amendment was necessary to allow the Secretary of State’s office time to reprogram their system following the November elections.
