Baton Rouge -- A bill that would make it illegal for dogs to ride openly in the back of trucks has cleared the House Transportation Committee.

House Bill 1091 would equire that dogs be placed in ventilated crates or a restraint system if they are in the back of a truck on an interstate highway.

State Representative Thomas Willmott is the sponsor of the bill.

It will now be voted on by the full house.

If the bill becomes law, violators would be fined up to $150 if they didn’t comply with the requirements for one dog, with another $50 for each additional dog.
