Paying It Forward: Food Bank of NELA gets surprise donation

WEST MONROE, La - Wednesday was an average day at work for Ashley White; Development Officer for the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana, that was until we showed up!

Carolyn Clampit with Hixson Ford was on hand to present White with a surprise.

"On behalf of Hixson Ford, Twin City Outdoor and Hogan Insurance the food bank has been nominated to receive $500 for Pay it Forward!" said Clampit told White.

White says the $500 donation will go a long way for the food bank.

"For every $1 dollar donated we can secure 5 meals" she explains.

That means the money will provide about 2,500 meals, helping to fill some of the empty stomachs in Northeast Louisiana!

"In the 12 parishes we serve, we have about 72,000 people that are fighting hunger, says White. "What that means is that they don't know where their next meal is coming from."

In the summer months, it's children and seniors who can be hit hardest.

"Kids are out for summer and they're not in school getting their lunch programs. So we will be able to use this money for programs such as that to feed kids during the summer, " says White. " Also our senior program. There are seniors all across the area  fighting high utility bills this summer, so this is another donation that can go to that program also."

Although this donation will certainly help, the fight against hunger is one that's never ending for the food bank!

It's a constant job to keep the community and warehouse shelves full.
