UPDATE: Council Approves Liquor Licenses for New Grocery Store Locations

UPDATE: Tuesday night the Monroe City Council approved alcohol sales permits to the locations at 4430 DeSiard St. and 1840 McKeen Place.

MONROE/WEST MONROE (KTVE/KARD) -- The Tuesday night Monroe City Council agenda features alcoholic beverage permit considerations for two proposed grocery stores in Monroe.

There aren't many details being released, but Mayor Jamie Mayo calls these locations strong possibilities.

"This agreement in which there's so much you can say at this particular time concerning what it is or who it is, but I think it's a foregone conclusion that it will be a grocery store."

One site sits on a three-acre lot at 1840 McKeen Place in Monroe across 18th Street from a Brookshire's.

It's set to be built by Polestar Development.

The second location sits inside a wooded lot at 4430 Desiard Street.

Local landowner Eddie Hakim said the lot has been sold to a developer and he confirmed it will be the site of a Walmart Neighborhood Market along with a small strip center of shops.

Hakim isn't naming the developer yet but said the deal should be closed by July 17th.

"There is a confidentiality clause in there in terms of when they can make that official announcement, but there will be two grocery stores," Mayo said.

There are also two proposed spots in West Monroe, including one at the Highland Shopping Center on 2400 Cypress Street.

The project superintendent for Tennessee-based RPM and Associates was at the center on Tuesday and told KTVE/KARD it will be torn down next Monday to make room for a new grocery store.

According to a Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality permit, Polestar Development is also securing land to the southeast of Cypress Street down Vernon Lane for more commercial development, possibly another grocery store.

While official announcements are yet to come, grocery store development is likely coming for the Twin Cities in the near future.

We will keep you informed as more details are released.
