RUSTON, LA -- A truck carrying jet fuel caught fire on Friday, briefly closing Interstate 20 west bound near Ruston.
The Ruston Fire Department says the brakes of the truck overheated.
The driver pulled over and used a fire extinguisher to put out the small fire.
The Ruston Fire Department quickly arrived on the scene and were quickly able to get the situation under control.
They say with the help of the driver, Louisiana State Police and the Department of Environmental Quality -- they avoided a much bigger disaster.
"This could have been a very serious incident. That type of fuel could have erupted, and we could have had some mass disaster with traffic traveling both directions. It could have been a real serious incident," said Eric Brazzel with the Ruston Fire Department.
The fire department says no one was injured in the incident.
Traffic continued to move slowly for a few hours Friday afternoon as the mess was cleaned up.
