UPDATE From Louisiana State Police: This morning at approximately 4:02 a.m. on Interstate 20 westbound on the Mississippi River Bridge, there was a crash involving six eighteen wheelers, one carrying a corrosive/flammable liquid material that was struck in the rear. This severed the liquid line on the tanker. This hazardous liquid material is leaking into the river. Cleanup crews and hazardous material personnel are on scene. Even though the crash occurred in Louisiana multiple agencies from Louisiana and Missi...ssippi are assisting with this incident.
There have been several other crashes that occurred on the bridge after the initial crash. There have been multiple injuries though none fatal and multiple vehicles. The bridge has been evacuated and the Coast Guard closed the Mississippi River to water traffic at 5:55 a.m. The weather is slowing the cleanup and we do not have an estimated time for when the bridge will be reopened. We will reopen the bridge as soon as it is safe to do so.
UPDATE: Mississippi Highway Patrol is reporting that the accident involves five tractor trailers and three vehicles.
The material leaking from the tanker is Isopropyl 2-Chloropropionate, which is highly flammable and toxic.
UPDATE: Louisiana State Police say they've evacuated a half mile area surrounding the crash on the Mississippi River Bridge due to the chemical leak. Louisiana and Mississippi hazmat teams are on the scene.
