Graham led all NFL tight ends in receiving last year with 86 catches for 1,215 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Graham did not specify whether the Saints franchised him as a tight end or as a wide receiver, but it is expected that the Saints would franchise him as a tight end.
Graham, officially listed as a tight end on New Orleans’ roster, lined up out wide or in the slot for 67 percent of the snaps in which he played last season.
It’s a big difference too, because franchised tight ends make $6.7 million for one season, and franchised wide receivers make $11.5 million for one season.
Every NFL team has the option to franchise one player per offseason and must pay that player the average of the 10 highest paid players at that position for one season.
The deadline to place the tag on Graham, or any other potential free agent Saint, is Monday.
Now, Saints fans must wait and see if he will play the 2014 season under the franchise tag or if he will hold out for a longer and more lucrative contract.
