BASTROP (KTVE/KARD) -- Dozens of students and parents gathered at Bastrop High School Monday night on the eve before the new school year for the Morehouse Parish School District's "Back to School Bash."

Starting at 6 p.m., school supplies were given out to students and food and games were provided as the community prepares for the start of a new and different school year.

After a summer in which the district was forced to trim millions of dollars off of their annual budget, go to a four-day school week and close down one of their elementary schools, district officials hoped the event would ring in the beginning of a successful new school year.

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers Chaplain R.V. Brown was the guest speaker at the event.

According to Brown, events like these can serve as the springboard students need going into a new school year.

"Take that momentum and drive it into the kids that when they start school tomorrow morning, they will be excited about school," Brown said. "That's what this is all about is taking their community and saying: 'This is your school. This is your community and get excited about it!'"
