Home Health House Calls: Taking A Diuretic

Taking a Diuretic

Welcome to Home Health House Calls

If you have problems with swelling your doctor may prescribe you a diuretic or Fluid pill to help get rid of excess water or salt.
Taking your diuretic can help you feel better and have more energy.
If you are prescribed 2 or more doses each day, take the last one before dinner-
That way you will get up fewer times during the night to go to the bathroom.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember.
If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose- do not take a double dose.
You will need to adjust your potassium intake according to your doctor’s guidelines.
A possible side effect of diuretics is dizziness- so you should get up slowly to help prevent dizziness and falls.
Limit sun exposure because Diuretics may increase your sensitivity to the sun.
For more information You can read the insert included with your medication or talk to your doctor with any concerns you may have.
