MONROE - Downtown Cinema is set to begin its 2014 season with a showing of Singin' In the Rain at 7:30 P.M. on Saturday, April 26th on the corner of Jackson and Desiard Streets in downtown Monroe. Downtown Cinema is a free outdoor movie event that showcases family friendly movies once a month during the spring and summer. Admission to the movie is free and Downtown Cinema also provides free popcorn and water. Attendees only need to bring their own seating.

Now in its sixth year, Downtown Cinema's audience has grown from its first showing of Back To the Future in 2009 to last season's largest crowd yet for The Lion King. "The idea for Downtown Cinema grew out of a desire to bring life to the downtown area," said Adam McDonald, one of many volunteers that makes Downtown Cinema happen. "We just wanted give people something fun to do. These are movies that people love and it's great to have the chance to see them again on the big screen, for free," said McDonald. Movies at Downtown Cinema are projected on a 10'x20' outdoor screen in the park at the corner of Jackson St. and Desiard St.

Downtown Cinema showings for the rest of the season include The Mighty Ducks on May 31st, Madagascar on June 28th and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on July 26th. For more information, visit
