UPDATE (1/12/18): The pit bull involved in the fatal attack that took place on Tuesday has been euthanized.

According to District Attorney Steve Tew, the owner of the dog gave consent to having the dog euthanized.

"This is a sad ending to an unimaginable tragedy," says Tew.

HOW CAN IT HAPPEN: Staci Choate, a Registered Veterinary Technician, said many things can cause a dog to respond violently. However she said those traits are learned. "It's what they're taught, even if they were raised as we saw in the Michael Vick case, they were raised and taught to fight."

Choate states that if you are getting attacked there are a few things you can do to protect yourself, "Make a big noise, yell at them, scream at them, jump up and down, do something that will scare them away. If you have something in your hand, throw it just get their attention off of you."

Pit Bulls are a form of Terrier and that means they come packed with a lot of enthusiasm. "Terrier's in themselves are high energy, they're very active, they're people pleasers, they want to be with their family. That's why we see a lot of trouble with Pit Bull Terriers because they are [such] a people pleasing breed, that they do whatever their people want them to do," Choate said.

Choate confirms that dogs often act out of fear.

Louisiana dog biting law state that a dog is vicious if it's aggressive, inflicts serious injury, or kills a human after already being previously determined to be dangerous.

Ouachita Parish currently has no ordnances that defines any dog as being vicious.
