Voters Show Up to Polls for Bastrop Mayoral Election

BASTROP, La.-- - Voters headed to the polls today at Bastrop High and other locations in hopes of choosing the town's next mayor.

Poll officials say the turnout hasn't been too high.

The lines not so long, and the polls not so full.

"They've been kind of sparse," Elain Milliren, Voting Poll Commissioner said. "We've had a few people out. I think because of the rain it's kept people out. A lot of people sleeping in, it's Saturday."

Depending on who you ask, there could be different reasons for that.

"People just don't come out, out to vote," Willie McDaniel, Voter said. "I'm just being honest about it."

"Because they are not letting different people vote outside of the city a lot of our parish people are not coming in to vote, which is kind of controversial, of course, because they want to be able to come in a choose their mayor too," Milliren said.

Most of the voters we talked to agree:

"This is our city, our country, and if you don't come out and vote, I mean, what do you expect to happen? You can't get results that you need and want," said Voter, Jennifer Gross.

"I mean, everyone should come out and vote," McDaniel said. "That's their civic duty.

They say exercising your right to vote is important.
