Traffic stop turns into drug bust in El Dorado

EL DORADO, Ark. - 2018 April 23

Twenty-four bottles of Promethazine, 1,000 Xanax bars, 2,500 Ecstasy pills, a 22 pound brick of marijuana, a gun and cash.

It carries the street value of more than $ 41,000.

It was all the part of a huge drug bust netted when El Dorado Police made a traffic stop that was anything but routine.

Officers say 34-year-old Derrick Rogers is the man behind the crime.

They stopped him on Highway 82 west right outside of El Dorado around 10:00 Sunday night.

"They observed a vehicle which appeared to be speeding and several other traffic violations," said Captain Kevin Holt said. " After the traffic stop was made the officers were able to identify some warrants on the driver and subsequently made an arrest."

Holt says they've made busts before, but this one is by far unique.

"You normally don't find a large brick, 22.5 pounds, that's quite a bit of marijuana to be transporting in," said Holt.

As for Rogers, he faces a long list of charges as he sits behind bars.

Speeding, Possession of a Firearm and Driving on Suspended Drivers License along with several drug charges.

But EPD tells us they most importantly the drugs seized won't ever make it to the streets.
