Traffic stop for unrestrained children leads to drug arrest

UNION Parish - Union Parish sheriff’s deputies stopped a vehicle on La. Hwy. 15 south near the Ouachita Parish line after observing two unrestrained children in its back seat.

Sheriff Dusty Gates said while talking to the driver, one of the deputies smelled a faint odor of marijuana and asked for permission to search the vehicle where some suspected methamphetamine was found.

Tina Marie Cardin, 36, of 127 Raleigh Rd., Calhoun, was arrested and booked Friday night (March 16) into the parish detention center at Farmerville. She was booked on counts of possession of meth, a felony, driving under suspension and two counts of no child restraints. Her total bond was set at $4,250.

The two children’s mother was contacted to come move the vehicle, Gates said.
