BATON ROUGE, La (WVLA) - 16-year-old Darius Plummer was shot in the head in the 4700 block of Southpark Drive. Plummer later died at an area hospital.
Derrick Ambrose, a cousin said Plummer went to his friends house to celebrate his birthday.
"Next thing you know he is on the floor covered with blood, no body know what happened, why did the dad take off running," said Ambrose.
Police later arrested the suspect, 49-year-old Octavio Bringas. Authorities said Bringas fled the scene and was arrested hours later by Louisiana State Police near Texas in Lake Charles.
Bringas told a relative that he was playing with a gun when it discharged striking Plummer. He said that he was not coming back and would not talk with police.
"Why would a grown man be playing with a gun around a kid anyway, why for what?"said Ambrose.
Ambrose, said Plummer was a good kid and showed him his love for basketball.
"When he was coming up, I used to take him to the court to play basketball with his brother," said Ambrose.
Plummer leaves behind three brothers.
Police have charged Bringas with second degree murder.
